“CLASSROOM CHIC”
Classroom Chic reappropriates the schoolgirl aesthetic from an overly nostalgic, overly sexualized perspective to an enjoyable, fashionable one. Shot in a basic studio, gesture, movement and positioning transform something so generic, a uniform, into an undeniably empowering endeavor. Each portrait looks candid in that time was taken to engage without looking at the camera but also less time was taken to engage with the styling possibilities. But the exposed (and managed) lighting to create texture and silhouette fosters an array of consistency in personality. This is a project less about the schoolgirl as we've known her before and more about how the modern-day youth takes the image of an icon and makes it something fashionable to comment on liberation, fun, and self-awareness.
